“We are old, so we moved out of the house to make space for my son and his family. He is among four who survived. Six died. That year everyone in the village died. Young men, old men, and all women. Before they died they vomited and had bad stomach for many weeks. The shamans could not treat them even after so many chickens were sacrificed. Because everyone told me that my children wouldn’t make it, I could not even give them names. So they died one after another. I felt sad but I don’t know how she must have felt. In those times, the jungle would be full of dead bodies. Some one told us to light incense in the morning and evening. I did all of what I was told but those six died. It was only after someone told us not to eat the carcass of animals and nettle leaves, people stopped dying. That was a long time ago. Today, we have four sons remaining and they all work. Things are better now. But we are old and so we have moved out of the house to make space for my son and his family.” - (Bir Bahadur Thami & Murari Thami, Suspa Chemawati 9, Dolakha)
