"It was evening, could have been a Tuesday or a Wednesday. Like everyday, after a long day at work, I had boarded the subway home. I saw a white guy and a black guy arguing and in no time they were exchanging punches and kicks. The train was crowded but everyone was watching. I felt like it was my duty to go stop them, but before I could intervene, the train stopped and the black guy boarded off and ran away. The white guy ran after him. By this time, I and a few others were out of the train. As they ran down I could hear someone wail in pain from the staircase. As I reached the staircase I could see a women laying on the steps bleeding from her elbow. I saw she was bruised in a few places in her leg. One of those guys must have pushed her. I ran to her and asked her if she was okay. She nodded her head, still in a lot of pain, as if to say she was okay. I ran to the near kiosk and got her water and called 911. The EMS arrived. Before I left, I went to the lady and asked her one more time if she was really okay. With fear, she said, 'I am okay, but I am worried about my baby inside me.' My heart sunk and as the medics carried her away, she watched me feel her pain. I think she saw something die inside of me that very moment.” (Ankit Pradhan, Manhattan, New York)
