"My first job in the US, when I first came, thirteen years ago, was at a liquor store. This big guy came in and asked me for some bottle of alcohol and I just could not understand what he was saying....

"My first job in the US, when I first came, thirteen years ago, was at a liquor store. This big guy came in and asked me for some bottle of alcohol and I just could not understand what he was saying. That night I came to my room and looked up names of almost 350 brands of alcohol and tried to memorise them to save myself from future embarrassments. I am just a son of a simple farmer from rural Nepal. What would I know of alcohol, right? But that is part of the game that everyone trying to make it in the US goes through. Today, I have done better, worked up from a minimum wage to a decent income. But I am still a son of simple farmer from Nepal. I say it with pride." (Bidhya Basnet, San Mateo, California)
