The Least I Can Do

(Part 2/3) "I somehow completed my school leaving certificate. It was all because father let me go to school. I have seen a lot of my friends who got married very young and were not able to go to school. But after father, my dreams of studying further did not come true. I am still happy that I can at least read and write like anyone. I got married not long after that and we moved to Surkhet. Now I have a son. Recently, there was more bad news for me. The only remaining brother I had also passed away. He had cancer and he could not be cured. He has left 4 children and his wife behind. When I heard the news I thought of my sister-in-law and those poor children. How was she going to take care of them now? My heart was with them, in the village. The life of a widow is not easy. People can be cruel and some of the things they say can be hurtful. Thinking of all of this, I lost my sleep. My husband noticed my exhaustion and he asked me if I was okay. I needed to confide in him for he is all I have. So I told him that I was thinking about my sister-in-law and her children and that I was worried about them. I asked him if we could bring them here and offer to look after them. We also heard about Kopila Valley School and sent in our interest in sending one of my brother’s son there. By god’s grace, he got selected and is attending school regularly. I am happy for the family. I am looking after 2 out of the 4. That is the least I can do for my late brother and his wife.”
