The eloping

I know the nature of our sons and our daughters is to leave. Long ago, I left father and mother for my love and I will understand if they leave too.

“We eloped because we knew in our hearts that our families would not accept our decision. And because we had fallen in love and living life without each other was something that both of us could not imagine. So we both decided that it was best for us and for our families that we left quietly. We both were aware that the journey ahead would be difficult as we had nothing with us to take. No money and no worldly possessions to take pride in. We knew together we would survive any ordeal, and with that, in our minds, we left in search of a better life. We climbed upwards unlike many people who would migrate towards the lower valleys and the plains. When we got here, the villagers felt our predicament and they come forward to help us. They said, "You are a son of a Newar, why don’t you do some business?” That got me thinking so the very next day I visited the district to plead with the merchant for rice and grains to sell. At first, he told me to go away and come back with money. But I told him my story and promised him that I will sell his goods in the village, keep my profit and pay him back. He must have recognised my honesty and he let me have several items for me to take with me. Back in the village, I was probably the very first person to open a shop. My wife would make tea and snacks and villagers would pour in. The Haatbazaar also attracted many villagers from the surrounding hills. Rupee by rupee we started saving. I also kept my word to the merchant and he was happy to have a regular buyer. With the help of the villagers, life changed for us and the children we had. We were able to send them to school and now all of them are in Kathmandu. I and my wife chose to live here, where we started, where the good story of our life began. We are still very much in love with each other, other than the occasional quarrel. And since the children are gone, it gets quiet around here and we wish to see them more often. But I know the nature of our sons and our daughters is to leave. Long ago, I left father and mother for my love and I will understand if they leave too."
