“A group of Japanese came to our village. We welcomed them with our dance. And they selected me. They told my father that they wanted to take me and 5 other girls from our area with them to Langtang. All we had to do was to go with them and show our dancing skills. So we went. I was so excited to go out of the village and see Kathmandu. At first we went to Kathmandu and then we went to Rasuwa. And Dhunche. I forget those names. It was so much fun. We all laughed until our stomach hurt. And we showed the guest our dance and every one clapped. And then we went to Kanzing Gompa but one of the guest got sick and we had to return. But it was so much fun. And then we went to Lauribina. And then I returned home but after a year the Japanese came back again, and took us to Annapurna Base Camp. We reached during the Losar of the Gurungs. We went to Pokhara and to the middle of the lake. So much fun I had. I don’t know how to express myself. And then there were two more tourist with the group. One always laughed. And then we went through Chumrung to Basecamp. And we stayed there and danced. I love dancing, I love to show my dancing skills, my art. At first I didn’t know anything but slowly I started dancing at home when no one was watching. When we reached Machapuchre Base Camp it was so much fun. There was so much snow to be cleared to make space for our dancing. But the men there are really hardworking unlike the men here. I saw the men work equally as women, unlike here. We danced to Resham Firiri and our group was named Super Mountain Girls. I tell you, it was so much fun. After Annapurna, I came back home. We can’t have fun all the time even if we want. I have so many dreams but it is not only me in my family, but my siblings too. My parent can’t just do everything for me. But my father tells me to study. And I will study hard, get a job and I will earn money. I will do something to make them proud. I will take care of them. But that is a different story. I am silly. But it was so much fun going out of my village. So much fun, I tell you.” - (Sabita Gurung, Simma, Sankhuwasabha).
