"My father was a poor hardworking farmer. We grew everything. I remember a coin fall off my father's pouch and I had picked it up and given it to him. I had asked him what it was and he had told me that the coin could feed us all for a week. I didn't believe it then. That was the first time I saw money. While I was growing up, we continued with farming. Village life is very hard. You grow what you eat and it's cold and the animals get hungry all the time. I see a lot of young people say, "Oh it's so hot, let me take a rest. Oh it's so cold, let me go some place warm." But for me and my brothers it was work from the time you woke up to the time you slept. And waking up was not 9 or 10, it was 3 or 4 in the morning. I and my husband are still farmers but much of the farming land is either taken up by buildings or by the landslides. And the earthquake. It was a scary day. But work, that won't stop for us. We still are poor hardworking farmers." (Maya Shrestha, Ghumthang, Sindhupalchowk)
