Hard to Believe

(Part 1/3) "The last nine years have been difficult for me. It was 9 years ago I got married and left my parent's home in Taplejung to come to my husband's home in this district. I never came across a day of happiness after that. Even though I bore 4 sons, only 2 survived. One has turned 7 recently and one in only 18 months. I have sent the older one to stay at a relative's house as my husband's home is far away from the school. And it is good for him also. He does not have to see his mother's tears. It is also good for him because he will not have to bear the cruelty of his grandmother. I do not understand how a woman her age who has seen so much in life not have the compassion to love her own grandchildren. Is it because my husband is not at home? The last time I spoke to my husband was over a year ago. He left for India and has not come back. Every time I ask my in-laws about him they tell me that they are not in touch with him and do not know his whereabouts. But it is hard to believe. I hear them whisper and talk about my husband. I hear strange phone calls and when I ask about it they refuse to tell me the truth…"
