"His body had started swelling and I took him to the doctor. I already knew something was wrong. I think even he understood the damage all the drinking had done to his body. His kidneys stopped functioning and his liver was damaged. Soon afterwards, his legs stopped moving and he was in a wheelchair. In the last five years I have practically spent most of the time taking him to the hospital and taking him back home. But home was quiet now as there was no more drinking. He must have had some time to reflect with a clearer head or maybe it was his guilt, he called me one day and said, 'You have been through a lot with me. Please bring me some rat poison and I will take it with the rest of the medicine and leave. I am tired.
