“My mother was an active woman. She tells me about the trips she had made with her father, who was in the British army. And maybe, because of the things that she had seen in other countries, the role that women play, she also instilled those values in me. I saw her lead the community in many ways. I would accompany her in social events and watch her. But she also was the women of the house, taking care of father and us. There are instances in our community where daughters are not treated equally. Even today, there are places where only sons are sent to school and daughters are sent off. It was because of my mother, that discrimination never found place in the house. So I went to school. Today, my daughter is growing too. I want her to be able to compete with everyone. I tell my daughter, “Daughter you can do what all men can. Sometimes you will think maybe you cannot, but in those times remember it is only in your mind.” (Nita Lingden Maden, Fungling, Taplejung)
