“I used to be a mechanic but since I never got the proper training that I had wished for, I could not operate and repair all kinds of machinery and tools. I tried, and not to lie to you, I did not do well. Then a friend suggested I drive a tractor. I had a family to support, so I asked him if I will earn enough and he said I would. So I agreed. And I drove a tractor in the hills of Ramechaap and Okhaldhunga. For a while, it was okay but again the money it brought me was not enough. Then I met a friend who drove a truck, delivering goods from the Terai to Kathmandu. And he said, ‘Why don’t you drive a truck? It is very easy and you will earn more that you earn with your tractor.’ I was convinced over a few drinks at the local shop. So I started driving this truck. It has been 5 years now and no bad incidents so far. I am a very careful driver. But you know, the problem still persists. The money is still not enough. And every night before I retire, I wonder if it will ever be enough. But whatever my condition, I am happy. What else can one do?” (Jitendra Yadav, Dhamauli 9, Rupandehi)
